Karen Tray Tribe Chopping Board
Named after the Karen people of Southeast Asia, this chopping board is beautifully handcrafted and ideal for everyday use. Local artisan Bic collects unused teak wood from the Chiang Mai region to create beautifully crafted chopping boards. After cutting the wood into shape, he cleans with water and a brass brush to scrub off any dirt. He then uses river pebble on the surface to bring up a shine before finishing with pure paraffin wax that seals the wood.

A self-described naughty schoolboy, Bic found the arts allowed him to focus his energy and cause less trouble in the classroom. Today, Bic is a laidback, happy-go-lucky man who lives by the motto ‘simple is perfect’. He applies this to both his work and attitude to life in general. He creates his most creative work when he is feeling positive and can be found working any time of the day or night depending on when the urge strikes.
Surrounded by wood from a young age, he appreciates its natural beauty and the feel of working with it. He discovered ceramics much later though and quickly came to appreciate how the materials complement each other – a tree needs to grow in soil and with the soil you can make clay. Using the materials together he brings the natural beautiful of earth to functional homewares.
Bic often spends time in the mountains around Chiang Mai and draws much inspiration from the local hill tribes. Despite having what most would describe as basic lives taking only what they need from raw materials, he feels this simplicity contributes to their joy and happiness. Bic aims to channel this simplicity into each of his pieces.
