More about Slowstitch Studio

Slowstitch Studio is the work of Serge and Ann – two young textile artists based in Northern Thailand. Their partnership is the result of a fortuitous meeting in Japan, where both were studying under the same craftsman.

Serge was born in Siberia and fell into the world of textiles and handicrafts when wandering rural Japan. After becoming a student of a local craftsman who had been living in nearby mountains for over 20 years, raising silkworms and growing indigo, Serge quickly found working with his hands to be addicting and soothing.

Ann was born in Thailand and pursed her passion for arts, crafts and design while studying in London before returning to Bangkok to work in design. The role focused on computer aided design and Ann felt a strong desire to return to the sensory and emotional experience of physically creating cloth with her own hands. She quit her job and flew to Japan to study indigo dying and traditional Japanese textiles.

Serge and Ann are inspired by sustainable ways of living and creating arts and crafts. Their works are deeply influences by their shared love for indigo, botanical dyes, traditional Japanese dyeing techniques and the beauty of creating things with hands, time and soul.

Slowstitch Studio’s fabrics are hand-dyed in their studio unless states otherwise and whenever possible they source hand-spun hand-woven materials.
