More about Ziya Kenya

Ziya Kenya is a Nairobi based organisation working with artisan communities from around the country. Kenya has more than 40 ethnic tribes, each with different trades and skills that have been passed down from previous generations. Many of the artisans skills today are self-taught by talented and enterprising individuals who share their knowledge as their businesses grow. All the pieces produced by Ziya incorporate the many talents of these diverse communities and include glass blowing, beading, horn and wood carving, and brass work.

The Ziya horn workers are from the traditionally creative Luo and Kamba tribe and work from Ngong, a town south west of Nairobi. Kibera, one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements, is home to a talented community of brass workers and wood carvers. The Kamba tribe in Yatta and Kitui specialise in sisal basketry, a fine art which is complemented by the Masai beaders found in Kiserian on the edge of the Rift Valley.

Through Ziya, these men and women are able to apply their trades to produce beautiful home ware, creating work opportunities and sustainable incomes exceeding the average minimum wage in areas where education and employment prospects are limited.
